PGWP Mistakes to Avoid: You Only Get One Post-Graduation Work Permit

The short answer

You can only get one Post-Graduation Work Permit in your lifetime, so it has to be right the first time. Apply within 180 days of your program completion confirmation, ideally before your study permit expires, with a valid language test (CLB 7 for university degrees, CLB 5 for college programs, if you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024) and, for most non-degree programs, a credential in an eligible field of study. Most DIY problems come from status gaps, the language test, program eligibility and passport validity.

I tell every student the same thing: your PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime permit. You can’t get a second one after a new program, and its length decides how much Canadian work experience you can build for permanent residence. A mistake here doesn’t just delay you. It can close the door.

Why the PGWP matters so much

For most graduates, the PGWP is the bridge to PR. Skilled Canadian work experience on a PGWP is what qualifies people for the Canadian Experience Class and adds CRS points, and it often leads to a provincial nomination. A shorter permit, or none at all, can mean running out of time before PR.

The rules to check before you apply

  • 180 days. Apply within 180 days of the official confirmation that you completed your program.
  • Program length. At least 8 months (900 hours in Quebec), at an eligible institution.
  • Full-time study. Full time in every semester, except the final one, which may be part time.
  • Language test. If you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024: CLB 7 in all four abilities for a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree and other university programs, CLB 5 for college and other non-university programs.
  • Field of study. If you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024, most non-degree programs must be in an eligible field of study. Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates are exempt.
  • Distance learning. No more than 50% of the program can be online.

The mistakes I see in DIY applications

  1. Letting the study permit expire first. If you apply before your study permit expires, you can usually keep working while the PGWP is processed. If you apply after, you can’t work until it’s approved, and you may need to restore your status.
  2. Leaving the language test too late. The result has to be submitted with your application and must still be valid. Book it early, so a lower score in one ability doesn’t leave you short of time.
  3. Assuming the program qualifies. Field-of-study eligibility depends on the program’s classification, and IRCC updates the list. Check with your school and IRCC before your final semester, not after.
  4. Part-time semesters and breaks. An unauthorized leave, or a part-time semester that wasn’t your last, can make you ineligible.
  5. An expiring passport. A work permit can’t be issued beyond your passport’s expiry date. Renew your passport first if it expires soon, or you may get a much shorter PGWP than you should.
  6. Planning to flagpole. Leaving and re-entering at the border to get a PGWP the same day is no longer an option. Apply online.
  7. Counting on a second PGWP. Doing another program to get a new permit doesn’t work if you already had one.

Plan for PR from day one

Your PGWP clock starts when it’s issued. Use it well: get into a job that counts as skilled experience as early as you can, keep pay stubs and reference letters, and know which PR route you’re aiming for. I go through that choice in Express Entry vs. PNP.

If you’d like your PGWP application checked before you submit, book a consultation. The work permits page explains how I help graduates.

Quick questions

Can I get a second PGWP?

No. You aren’t eligible for a PGWP if you’ve already received one, even after completing another program.

Can I work while my PGWP application is processed?

Usually yes, if you applied before your study permit expired and you were allowed to work off campus during your studies. If your study permit expired before you applied, you can’t work until the PGWP is approved.

Do I need a language test for my PGWP?

Yes, if you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024. You need CLB 7 for university degree programs or CLB 5 for college programs, in all four abilities.

Can I apply for a PGWP from outside Canada?

Yes, if you completed your program in Canada or meet the distance learning rules. You can’t work in Canada until the permit is approved.
